Spinnaker Tower looks pretty in pink to support Wear A Hat Day for Brain Tumour Research

Spinnaker Tower will be bathed in pink light in support of Wear A Hat Day on Friday 31st March 2017 for the national charity Brain Tumour Research. Wear A Hat Day is the UK’s premier brain tumour awareness event, raising money to improve the lives of patients and help find a cure.

Ellie Morgan, PR Executive at Emirates Spinnaker Tower, said: “Emirates Spinnaker Tower is proud to support the charity Brain Tumour Research and its pioneering dedicated research Centre of Excellence at the University of Portsmouth by lighting pink this Friday.”

The 170m high Emirates Spinnaker Tower was also lit with pink light for both Wear A Hat Day 2015 and 2016, in addition to hosting two sponsored abseils to help raise funds for Brain Tumour Research.

Wear A Hat Day, now in its eighth year, is inspired by the 16,000 people who are diagnosed each year and it is dedicated to the memory of those lost to a cancer which hasn’t seen the same advancements in understanding and treatment as some other cancers and is now sadly more common than a generation ago.

Sue Farrington Smith MBE, chief executive of the charity, said: “Wearing a hat for the day is a simple and fun way of raising awareness and money. It also sends a great message of hope, solidarity and support for patients and their families and those like me who have lost a loved one to this dreadful disease.

“Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer… yet just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease. This is unacceptable!

“We are extremely grateful to Spinnaker Tower for supporting Wear A Hat Day 2017 and hope that the sight of this national icon in pink, the official colour of Wear A Hat Day, will inspire people to support Wear A Hat Day on Friday 31st March!”

Brain Tumour Research is campaigning to see the national spend on brain tumour research increased to £30 million – £35 million a year, in line with breast and leukaemia, in order to advance treatments and ultimately find a cure.

The charity is urging others to rally their organisations and contacts to get involved in Wear A Hat Day by wearing a hat and making a donation, buying specially-designed pin badges or a limited edition brooch as well as wristbands, baseball caps, plush top hats and even a hat for their car grille.
