Abseiling – Frequently Asked Questions
What is Abseiling at Emirates Spinnaker Tower?
Thrill-seekers can complete an abseil from a platform on the side of Emirates Spinnaker Tower, enjoying breath-taking views of Portsmouth Harbour, the city and the Solent as they make their descent down this iconic building.
When can I abseil?
Emirates Spinnaker Tower holds abseiling weekends throughout the year.
Please check here for current dates and availability as they do sell swiftly.
Charities and other organisations also book private abseiling days with Emirates Spinnaker Tower. There are only a limited number of these held during the year. Details of these dates can be found on the charity/organisations respective websites.
How high will I abseil from?
You will abseil from 94 metres up.
Do I need to book in advance?
We strongly recommend you do book in advance as we cannot guarantee there will be availability on the day. There are limited spaces available during the year and we often sell out.
How do I know if I can complete the abseil?
You are responsible for ensuring that you are in a fit state to participate in the abseil and are able to participate in a manner which will not put at risk your health & safety or the health & safety of bystanders below you.
If you have any conditions or concerns that may impact your ability to safely complete the abseil which you have not notified us of in advance, then you should notify us on the day of your visit. We will use reasonable endeavours to make arrangements to facilitate your abseil, however, taking into account your health & safety and those around you we reserve the right, without refund, to refuse permission to participate in the abseil if we believe it would jeopardise your health & safety or that of other participants.
Are there any age or height restrictions?
The minimum age for abseilers is 18 years old. A maximum weight limit of 21.5 stone also applies.
Can I abseil if I'm pregnant?
Unfortunately not. The harness is quite snug and the abseil can be physically demanding.
Is abseiling accessible for disabled guests?
Guests are requested to address specific access requirements in advance of their booking by contacting firstname.lastname@example.org or phoning 023 9285 7521. We will always endeavour to accommodate special access requirements. Due to the nature of abseiling down Emirates Spinnaker Tower and our obligations to the health & safety of all our guests, there may be times when we are unable to accommodate your specific needs.
I've got a fear of heights. Can I still abseil?
Yes, we will do everything we can to reassure you in the lead up to and when completing your abseil. However, to respect the experience of our other abseilers, you must begin your abseil within 10 minutes of your allotted time slot once at the departure point. If another slot is available on the same day, we can reschedule the abseil; otherwise it will be cancelled with no refund.
We do not recommend the abseil to anyone with vertigo.
Will I need any training before I complete my abseil?
Yes, but it is all part of the experience on the day. You’ll be given a safety briefing up on the view decks where you’ll meet your guides. They’ll give you tips and answer any questions you may have.
What do I do on the day of my abseil?
Make your way to our reception desk to check in and full instructions will be given. Make sure you wear sensible shoes (no open toes, heels etc.) and wear non-restrictive clothing. Dress appropriately for the weather – it can be cold up there!
Can I get a refund if I need to cancel my abseil?
There is a non-refundable deposit of £25 when you book an abseil. You are eligible for a refund of the remaining amount if you cancel within 3 months of your abseil.
Can I change the date or time of my abseil?
Within three months of the abseil booking, no amendments may be made and cancellations will receive no refund.
Will bad weather ever cause my abseil to be cancelled?
Yes, in extreme weather conditions, we will be unable to open for abseiling. If this occurs, the abseil will be rescheduled to a time which you are able to attend or you will be reimbursed if you are unable to attend a rescheduled time.
If you are unable to attend an alternative time we shall have no liability to you whatsoever other than to refund the price paid (excluding the non-refundable deposit) for the booking, including, without limitation, no liability for travel or accommodation expenses.
Please take a look at our complete terms & conditions to ensure you understand our refunds policy before you book.
Can I bring my camera with me on my abseil?
You will be unable to take your own camera with you during your actual abseil as you will need both hands to complete it! However, we will take a photo of you at the beginning of your abseil, which can be purchased from our shop at the base of Emirates Spinnaker Tower. We also offer Go Pro video recordings of your abseil. The Go Pro is placed on your helmet and captures your whole experience. We will then transfer all the footage to a USB which can be purchased. Videos and photos can be pre-booked when you book your abseil or purchased on the day.
