A proud resident of Southsea, Samantha (Founder & Director at Southsea Bathing Hut) taught herself to make soap using the traditional ‘cold process’ method – the way your grandparents might have made it. Samantha read about Portsmouth’s long-lost heritage as a soap-making city. Now, Southsea Bathing Hut bring you a whole range of products, designed to make your skincare experience as restorative as a soothing trip to the seaside.
Every product is lovingly handmade and packaged here in small batches, using traditional methods. The original recipes are totally unique. Southsea Bathing Hut use the highest quality, natural ingredients with the best benefits for your skin. They’re never tested on animals and are free from all the nasty stuff – it’s so natural it’s classed as vegan!
Until the 1930s, Portsmouth had a flourishing tallow chandlery (candle) and soap making industry. The major players were William Tilly & Son of Prospect Row and Doudney’s of Commercial Road. They were largely tied into Portsmouth naval activity, born by the need to keep ships, uniforms and equipment pristine.
Southsea Bathing Hut is bringing this forgotten part of Portsmouth’s heritage back to life. Their artisan soaps are made as they would have been produced back in Victorian times and their soaps are cured for an unusual 4 months to produce a purer, higher quality and harder soap!
